First Page : Andora Benson clicked off and dropped the phone into her bag, wishing her sister luck. Gallery openings are always hard on the nerves and the checkbook, but it was what Giselle had always wanted, so Andora was happy enough. She would drop by later that evening to sample the Spanish wine her sister would have picked instead of champagne. She stepped out of the Mini and patted it on the roof as she always did. She looked at the building, squinted, pulled out the shred of yellow paper and read the address again. Yes, this was eighteen-eleven, and yes, this was Barlowe Street, not Road. Yet this was no house or apartment building, but an old auto repair shop, or used to be. Steel garage doors were pulled shut like rippled eyelids, colored by rust and artwork from the spray cans of years past. The signatures of countless rubber tires crosshatched the uneven white pavement sprawling in front. The signs were gone but still displayed hinted imprints of various services: Transmission, Brakes, Foreign and Domestic. A ghost town of the modern day.
